Sure some areas had record rainfall and there was local flooding but any predicted calamity did not occur. On this one, I am with the BOM. If their reading of the tea leaves was extreme weather then they were duty- bound to warn the populace.
And the weather was very, very dirty in many areas, events were cancelled which was prudent. However, the major scaremongering came from the metropolitan media that continues to be at a loss once they venture 50 kilometres from the city. When will they understand that caravan parks do flood when rivers are brimming because they are situated on floodplains, where common sense does not allow the erection of permanent structures. It could have been far worse given the limited air room in our storages. The downside is crop damage but many storages rose and much of the increased river flows will be utilised in coming weeks for irrigation.
ASSESSMENT
The recent on property judging of Victorian simmental herds is not a new concept, however, it has the potential to being a part of good breeding operations. Many large seed-stock breeders have their sale bulls, in particular, structurally assessed and scored by an independent operator. So it follows that another pair of eyes providing guidance can only be advantageous.
After all, the merino breeding industry has since time in memorial used outside classers. Structural assessment has never been more important where many breeders rely so heavily on selecting sires on performance figures.
