By the Border’s standards we did not have an overly hot summer last year, with just five days over the 40 mark and none in December.
Although with the Christmas 2016 temperature reaching 35.6, Santa still would have been pretty hot in that red suit of his.
We all need to take extra care as well.
Those Christmas party drinks will go down easier and to the heads a lot quicker, rivers and creeks will be running quickly after some recent rain, and the vulnerable members of our community may suffer if this turns into an extended hot spell.
By the time extreme hot weather hits us we’re often in the midst of summer holidays, free to take some time out to relax and stay cool.
But mid-December can be the most stressful time of year, so it is extra important to take steps and look after yourself.
Wangaratta police crime prevention officer Leading Senior Constable Helen Parfett put it perfectly this week when she warned people to “save yourself from regrets” when it comes to drinking alcohol over the festive period.
“Staying together and looking after one another is one of the best ways to stay safe – stop your friends from getting into fights,” she said.
“You are more vulnerable to violence and accidents when you’ve had too much to drink.
“Alcohol affects everybody differently so get to know your personal limits and stick to them.”
The good news is that we live in a great part of the world to enjoy the hot weather.
The ponies walking in the Murray River on the front page of today’s Border Mail are a great example of the fun that can be had when you have accessible swimming spots near farming areas.
Councils have warned their residents to take care today and it would be smart to listening.
Going outside without having sunscreen and a hat or without drinking enough water would not be so smart.
Summer can be the most fun time of the year, so have fun with the warmth the sunshine will bring – just please don’t do anything stupid.
