Father Flanagan retired after 54 years as a priest mid-year including the last 40 years at Sacred Heart.
He celebrated his 89th birthday in August, but his retirement has been brief.
“The enthusiasm is there and I would dearly love to continue on of course,": he said upon his retirement.
“But I've had a wonderful innings.”
Funeral details are expected to be confirmed today.
Father Flanagan survived a heart attack in 2003, but continued on for another 14 years to be the priest of choice for countless weddings, funerals and baptisms in addition to regular church services.
The first of many tributes has appeared on the St Anne’s Primary School Facebook page this morning.
“(Father) Kevin died peacefully overnight at the Mercy.
“He was an integral part of our community for over 40 years.
“We will miss his inclusiveness, leadership, great faith and most of all, his friendship.
“Rest In Peace Father Kevin.”
