A $12,500 grant from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund has paid for a new shade structure at the grounds, improvements in the marquees and marketing.
Racegoers can go in the draw for a $350 package covering entry, a night’s accommodation and transport provided by Quest Wodonga and the Mt Beauty Bendigo Bank community branch.
Preparations are under way for next Saturday’s race and club secretary Alanna Kirley said the committee had been working hard in the background to increase the event’s offerings.
“The prize money for the cup has been increased this year to $5000, which is the maximum a country cup in Victoria can be,” she said.
“For the first time this year all the sporting groups that use the grounds throughout the year are a sponsor of our race; we’re all putting in prize money to promote how the grounds are used outside of the race.
“We had 18 millimetres of rain on Thursday night – the grounds are looking green and beautiful – and the weather on the day is looking to be 34 degrees.
“We’ve still got Fashions on the Field, the Madman’s Mile and the tug-of-war.”
The Dederang picnic races, held annually since 1865, is known for its race for revellers and unusual track that climbs uphill for 100 metres.
The club is contributing $11,000 towards the cup with a further $1,500 provided by Country Racing Victoria.
The day will feature a six-race program and live performances by Albury-based vocalist Paul Gibbs, with kid’s entertainment provided by Kelly Sports.
Buses will run from Albury, Wodonga, Yackandandah, Myrtleford, Bright, Porepunkah, Mt Beauty and Tawonga.

Entries close Tuesday, January 2 at midday, as do sales for marquee tickets.
