A BORDER cricket player has been charged with rape and sexual assault after alleged offences in the early hours of Boxing Day.

Mt Beauty coach and player Ashan Ranaweera is facing two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault.
The 44-year-old first appeared before Wangaratta court for a filing hearing last week and will return on May 10 for a committal mention.
The Sri Lankan national was bailed, but had to hand over his passport.
The matter has been referred to immigration authorities.
The offences allegedly occurred in Mt Beauty.
A meeting had been planned at the club on Tuesday night to discuss the matter.
Ranaweera has not been playing for the reigning premiers since the allegations became known.
President Kevin Vale said he did not want to comment ahead of the meeting.
Cricket Albury Wodonga chairman Michael Erdeljac declined to comment.
Ranaweera had played state level cricket in Sri Lanka before moving to Australia.
He joined Mt Beauty in 2004, followed by a stint playing in Melbourne.
He returned to Mt Beauty in 2008.
Police continue to investigate the matter.
