The trees are being axed for Griffith Street to be reconstructed from kerb to kerb.
Car parking bays have been formed alongside the high school’s oval to cater to staff during the works.
Anthony Atkins and wife Deidre have been in Griffith Street for nearly 40 years.
“Unfortunately the trees had to go, it is sad to see it happen but hopefully in five years’ time it will be a good result,” Mr Atkins said.
“They’re going to be replaced with six-metre pin oak trees.
“The road was in poor condition, it was dusty in the summer on the edge and muddy in the winter.”
The 30 pin oaks, 15 on each side of the street, were planted in the 1920s.
