The fire was seen on the side of a hill at Bellbridge at 4.30am, after a 3am storm.
CFA District 24 operations officer Adrian Gutsche said about 10 fire trucks responded and kept the fire to about 10 hectares.
“It travelled uphill reasonably quickly considering there wasn’t much wind around,” he said.
Small fires also sparked in Gundowring, Bethanga and Talgarno.
Mr Gutsche said after 10 days over 35 degrees, the grass was very dry and the Border was under threat from another lightning storm expected on Thursday night.
He urged landowners to check their properties for small fires.
“There’s been thousands of lightning strikes north of us … We’re fortunate we’ve kept the rest of them to under five hectares,” he said.
“Every lightning strike that hits the ground has the potential to start a fire.”
