But there's never been any slowing down Indigo Shire's Citizen of the Year.
Mr Croucher was officially recognised at the Kiewa-Tangambalanga ceremony on Friday morning, and thanked for the countless hours of service to his community.
A member of the Kiewa Tangambalanga Lions Club, Mr Croucher has lived in Tangambalanga for most of his life, and spent eight years in local government.
He has also been the secretary of the Kiewa District Tennis Association for 34 years and been associated with the Atauro Island Friendship Committee, as well as being junior council coordinator.
“I'm very humbled, and very excited about the whole thing,” Mr Croucher said.
“I enjoy working with people, I've been in teaching for most of my life, then went into local government.
“I love working with communities, and luckily I've got an ability with music, so that helps me get out and about and involved in things as well.”
That talent with music has led Mr Croucher to play music at 42 deb balls – as well as perform the national anthem in Friday's proceedings.
Former St Kilda coach Stan Alves was the Australia Day ambassador for the Indigo Shire, and spoke of the importance of teaching young people the significance of Australia Day.
“Today is important because it causes you to reflect,” he said.
“I’ve been able to go to a few places, listen to the youth, and understand that we are in good hands.
“Listening to young children, they can only be that way because they’re surrounded by a good community - that’s Australia Day.”
Indigo Shire's Community Organisation of the Year was Chiltern's Black Dog Soup Kitchen, a group who provide nutritious meals to those in need, as well as delivering to 26 elderly and disabled residents around town.
The Young Citizens of the year were the Tangambalanga Action Crew, a group of young people who came together to organise the Kiewa-Tangambalanga Mini-Music Fest in November last year.
Certificates of Achievement were also awarded to Beechworth's Kathryn Chivers, Rutherglen's Bill Meagher, Barnawartha's Rita Ryan and Yackandandah's Dave Crook.
In Towong Shire, more than 200 people enjoyed an Australia Day breakfast in Tallangatta, where Jonathon Thomas was named Citizen of the Year.
Tallangatta Secondary College captain Jai Butler was named Young Citizen of the Year, while Jess O'Reilly's Maddie Riewoldt fundraiser was the Event of the Year.
