The additional costs are attributed to the extra work associated with the discovery of a large amount of unsuitable soil base material on the secondary sportsfield being created as part of the project initially budgeted to cost $9.5 million.
The soil issues were first reported by The Border Mail in November last year and were initially expected to cost up to an additional $2 million.
“It’s an unfortunate turn of events beyond our control,” mayor Kevin Mack said.
“But I’m pleased to say the extra costs will not be a burden to ratepayers as the over-run will be met by savings in other areas.
“”So there’ll be no cuts to any other services or programs.”
More to come.
