Michael Andrew Kennedy was ready with a knife when he carjacked the driver on Beechworth Road in Wodonga on November 9 last year.
The Ford Falcon later crashed into a power pole on the corner of Kiewa and Hovell streets in Albury.
Kennedy was nowhere to be seen after the smash, leading to a manhunt and a police appeal for information.
He was arrested during a search warrant in Lavington four days later.
When asked how he wanted to plead in the Wodonga Magistrates Court on Thursday, Kennedy replied “guilty”.
Kennedy will spend his 33rd birthday in custody on Friday after deciding not to apply for bail.
He squinted through much of Thursday's hearing and sat with his arms crossed.
Magistrate Peter Mithen was told there were no custody management issues.
He will face the next circuit of the Wodonga County Court, which starts on May 7.
