A player, who did not wish to be identified, said the incident happened behind him, so he assumed it was a marking contest where Uthayakumar landed awkwardly at the Lavington Sportsground.
“We’re shattered for Erish,” Albury co-coach Shaun Daly said.
“Our first priority is to get Erish looked after and get the best treatment we can get.”
Neither Daly or club president Stuart Hodgson wanted to speak about the incident until they had all the facts.
The O and M says it will do what it can to support Uthayakumar.
“We feel for Erish, obviously our priority is to make sure he’s OK and his welfare’s looked after,” general manager Sean Barrett said
It’s unknown at this stage if Uthayakumar will play this season but, if he doesn’t, it leaves a hole up forward, particularly given the departure of leading goalkicker Josh Mellington.
The ex-Victorian Amateurs’ player kicked 47 goals in his debut season.
Under the points system, Uthayakumar is a three, but there’s no compensation available to Albury.
The incident occurred while filming a new advertisement, to be shown on television in both the lead-up to and during the season.
“It’s a refresh, a more holistic look at the activities of our clubs,” Barrett said.
“Our clubs are all major parts of their communities, we want to take a wider look at what the clubs are involved in.”
Advertising agency Dutch Media is producing the promo.
