Chief executive Leigh McJames was responding to Wodonga councillor Ron Mildren who told Monday night’s council meeting he believed there was a blueprint to shift Albury hospital east.
“My understanding is the long term plan is to actually relocate the Albury hospital out to Thurgoona and have the cancer centre essentially takeover the whole hospital,” Cr Mildren said.
The councillor was commenting during debate about speculation that AWH planned to shift Wodonga’s acute hospital services to its Albury campus.
Cr Mildren put a motion to condemn any decision of AWH to take acute services out of Wodonga.
It failed 4-3, after a majority of councillors, including mayor Anna Speedie, said more details were needed from AWH about its plans.
Mr McJames responded on Tuesday with a prepared statement.
“There has been some recent speculation about the future location of AWH services,” he said.
“There are no plans to close either the Albury or Wodonga campus nor to re-locate the service to Thurgoona.
“AWH has a long term commitment to maintaining services at both the Albury and Wodonga hospitals and to continue to enhance the services that it provides to the community.
“The Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre and the cardiac catheterisation laboratory are great examples of the increased services AWH is delivering to reduce the need for patients to travel to capital cities for treatment.”
