Albury Police Citizens Youth Club is running Time 4 Kids, a fundraiser where people are detained in a special mock jail until able to raise at least $1000 bail from their friends, families and colleagues.
Already real estate, motor and leisure businesses have signed up for the event at Albury Bunnings on Wednesday and Thursday and some cells may still be available.
To help inmates get into the spirit of the day, they are given a prisoner uniform to wear and a tin to rattle while locked up.
The initiative, last run in November with a different group of participants, links in with NSW Youth Week and precedes Albury PCYC’s open day on Saturday, which aims to promote the organisation’s resources and programs.
PCYC advisory committee president Stephen Chaffey said the club provided good services, but needed to utilise its space better.
“You’ve got a facility that is here to be hired and used for activities that benefit the community",” he said.
Mr Chaffey said Time 4 Kids always grabbed the public’s attention.
“I think people like to see dignitaries around town locked up behind bars,” he said with a smile.
Participants could expect to be jailed for about an hour.
“Unless the money is not forthcoming and then they could be there for a bit longer,” Mr Chaffey warned.
