Jim Hermiston said he’d lived through fires in the region before, but nothing this significant.
“I’m incredibly grateful for everyone effort, it’s amazing,” he said.
The fire, near Kywong Howlong Road, was just one of many out of control blazes that burnt on both sides of the border on Thursday.
Rural Fire Service and the Country Fire Authority lead firefighting efforts in their states with assistance by Fire and Rescue NSW.
A spokesman for RFS Albury said all fires were under control, however residents should remain alert especially near the Gerogery, Broklesby and Boomanoomana blazes.
The cause of the fires has not been released.
Fire and Rescue superintendent Stewart Alexander said by 5pm the larger fires at Thoona, Gerogery, Berrigan, Bundalong South and Boomanoomana, along with small blazes were contained.
“The coordination between Fire and Rescue NSW, RFS and CFA was excellent and no small part quick response and minimal damage,” he said.
Mr Stewart said known houses were affected, but stock, crops and sheds were lost.
He said Fire and Rescue teams were released about 5pm but RFS firefighters would work into the night doing black out work and monitoring the situation.
“The property damage was kept to minimum who was kept to a very pleasing outcome,” Mr Stewart said.
It was a long day for Border firefighers who responded early to four deliberately lit fires in Wodonga.
Firefighters were called to the incidents on Felltimber Creek Road, Old Barnawartha Road, Plunketts Road and at Federation Hill between about 10pm on Wednesday and 8am on Thursday.
The fires burnt through grass and scrub during dry and windy conditions.
