Nigel Franks, 20, received a six-month jail sentence that was suspended for 12 months.
He was also fined $750 and placed on a 12 month community corrections order.
The decision was met with anger by protesters, who gave Franks a hostile reception when he arrived at Wodonga Magistrates Court.
The animal welfare supporters also followed Franks and his family as he left, deriding him for the killing.
