Officers had been patrolling Dean Street on motorbikes on Sunday and stopped near Kiewa Street.
A 44-year-old man, who had blood covering his hand and was holding a middy, stopped in front of the police despite a traffic light turning green.
He yelled and swore at police and had to be forcefully put into a caged van.
He continued to threaten officers in the police cells.
