Structural engineers will inspect the overpass but in the meantime, it will remain closed to traffic due to safety concerns.
Southbound traffic is being diverted off the Hume at the Riverina Highway exit but vehicles can quickly get back on the freeway via the on-ramp at Borella Road.
Powerlines, which catered for nearby traffic lights, and a stormwater drain were also damaged in the collision.
Firefighters are in the process of getting the excavator upright. Part of the process involves cutting the boom off the machine.

EARLIER: The Hume Highway is closed near the Borella Road overpass.
It appears a large piece of machinery has fallen onto the road.
Traffic can exit at the Riverina Highway off-ramp and re-join the Hume Highway using the on-ramp.
