The flame-haired 53-year-old, whose style is cleverly described as “eclectic Celtic”, has sold more than 14 million records in a career spanning a quarter of a century.
On The Wind That Shakes The Barley, McKennitt harks back to an earlier sound — her dalliances with pop offset by her strongest focus on a Celtic vibe in more than a decade.
The opener, the traditional Irish ditty As I Roved Out, showcases McKennitt’s signature vocal style over a haunting backdrop.
Most of the album’s tracks are traditional to either Ireland or Scotland and The Star Of The County Down and the melancholic title tune loom as fan favourites. The instrumental Brian Boru’s March also makes for lovely listening.
