The footage, which was originally posted on Facebook by truck driver Jack Hunter on Thursday, has been viewed more than 42,000 times and is being used by police to investigate.
Wodonga Highway Patrol Sergeant Cameron Roberts said the footage shows a "stupid decision" by the driver of a Sureway Employment and Training company car to overtake two trucks on the Murray Valley Highway near Tallangatta.
"If the Hilux ute had swerved the other way it definitely would have been a head-on collision," he said.
"Dash cams can be a very useful tool in investigating traffic incidents like this, especially if they are good quality and have features such as a date and time stamp and the speed the vehicle is travelling at."
The footage is dated Wednesday, July 24 and shows the incident happened at 11.33am. The speed shows the truck travelling at 91km/h as the car overtakes.
The footage was only brought to the attention of Sergeant Roberts on Tuesday. Tallangatta police was investigating the incident.
Sergeant Larry Goldsworthy said the footage had been handed to police on the day of the incident.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We have received a complaint and we are currently investigating the incident captured on the dash camera footage," he said.
"It would be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage as we are still to talk to the drivers involved."
Sureway chief executive Matthew Hall was unable to be contacted yesterday for further comment on the status of their "internal investigation".
He told The Border Mail on Friday the company was aware of the incident captured "which clearly involves a Sureway vehicle".
"We will be conducting a thorough internal investigation as quickly as possible," he said on Friday.
Mr Hall said that he could not confirm at that stage the identity of the employee involved was or what branch the employee was attached to until the investigation was completed.
"Sureway takes road safety very seriously and safety is paramount," he said.
