Officers from the Victorian fraud and extortion squad, who are investigating Mr Thomson over allegations that he misused union funds on prostitutes and made cash withdrawals in excess of $100,000, contacted Mr Thomson earlier this week asking him to provide information about his claims, which he made on the weekend to journalist Laurie Oakes.

Mr Thomson's lawyers, Holding Redlich, yesterday formally declined a police request that he provide a statement or nominate those he claims were involved in trying to frame him.

Instead, Mr Thomson told police that he will nominate certain people in his speech to Federal Parliament on Monday.

Mr Thomson, who was the national secretary of the Health Services Union from 2002 until 2007, claimed on the weekend that: ''In about 2004, amongst a whole range of other threats that were made to me, one was that they would ruin my potential political career … by setting me up with hookers.''

Mr Thomson accused the HSU's Michael Williamson of being ''complicit'' in a campaign to ruin his political ambitions - which Mr Williamson has denied.

But in Mr Thomson's maiden speech as an MP in 2008, he described Mr Williamson as a ''marvel'' and thanked him for his ''long-term support''.

Mr Thomson also stands accused of giving false evidence to Fair Work Australia about his dropping of a defamation case against Fairfax Media, the owners of The Age. Gail Hambly, Fairfax Media's general counsel, said Mr Thomson had mislead FWA by suggesting Fairfax was keen to settle the action because he was able to prove it was not him who had used union funds on prostitutes.

According to the recently released FWA report, Mr Thomson told investigators he was ''reluctant to take the settlement offer … but, for someone in his position, winning would not have been great publicity either''. He said he did not want a public hearing as it may have caused stress to his pregnant wife. In an email dated May 2011 and marked ''Private and Confidential, Not For Publication'', Mr Thomson told FWA that due to confidentiality restrictions he wasn't able to provide FWA with specific reasons as to what ''influenced'' Fairfax to settle.

He then said Fairfax's handwriting expert had concluded his signature on brothel receipts had been forged.

Ms Hambly said no such information was provided by Mr Thomson and Fairfax had never engaged a handwriting expert.

''Mr Thomson's evidence to FWA is not an accurate reflection of the facts and we will be asking Mr Thomson to correct the record,'' said Ms Hambly.

Meanwhile the Electoral Commission has asked the ALP and the HSU for information about more than $17,000 expenditure relating to Mr Thomson after reviewing the FWA report on the HSU. The review found no breaches of the law by Mr Thomson.
