GABRIEL CURTIN: INHABITANTS
WANGARATTA ART GALLERY WORSHOP SPACE
As a final year VCE student, Gabriel Curtin is an emerging artist who shows great promise for a future in the arts. As the youngest artist to stage a solo exhibition at the Wangaratta Art Gallery, ‘Inhabitants’ will explore the relationship between man, wildlife and nature in a compelling display.
Water colour paintings and sculptural works produced over the last twelve months will present Gabriel’s ideas about human nature and contemporary life. Critical of the modern world, Gabriel believes humans consider themselves to be supreme beings; ‘tamer of beast and master of nature’, when the truth is that we are fundamentally only beasts ourselves and have lost touch with reality. Gabriel explains; ‘We now find ourselves in an age gone mad on stimulation, where our eternal bond with nature and the universe is suppressed and hidden beneath a society that teaches greed, ignorance and self-interest.’ He hopes that his exhibition will draw attention to the error of our ways and help people to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Acting Director at the Gallery, Rita Lazauskas, says; ‘Gabriel is obviously very well read and a deep thinker and his ideas and artwork have a maturity that is impressive. It’s an ambitious project that we are very pleased to support at the gallery.’ Gabriel hopes to further develop his interests by studying visual arts at university next year.
The exhibition will be officially opened by Beechworth artist Alan Phillips at 5.30pm on Friday November 16 in the Gallery Workshop Space. For further information contact the gallery (03) 5722 0865.
Until December 2
INHABITANTS
WANGARATTA ART GALLERY
Inhabitants explores the often neglected and forgotten relationship between man, wildlife and nature. Human inhabitants believe themselves to be supreme beings; tamer of beast and master of nature. This exhibition intends to demonstrate, through juxtaposition and surreal imagery, the absurdity of man’s empire, the everlasting beauty of the natural world and its inhabitants, and the necessity of a life of truth. The exhibition is in the gallery’s Workshop Space.
Until December 2
ANNEMIEKE MEIN
BENALLA ART GALLERY
Annemieke Mein’s artworks are unashamedly inspired by nature. Birds, flowers, the regeneration of life forms, the seasons, sun and moon can all be found in this exhibition. Always popular and in demand, Mein’s work brings meticulous needlework, drawing skills and a love of nature together, transforming and blending them together in an original and compelling vision of the natural world. Each subject is researched, drawn, planned for colour and production, and then the hours of commitment and fine judgement begin. When the artwork is complete, we are completely unaware of the inspiration and labour, we are transported directly to the wonder the artist is sharing.
