Police were told the three people — two men and a woman in their 40s — were in the rotunda at a park off Punt Road when one of the men became involved in an argument with a passing stranger.
The stranger got into a red car and, after driving towards the Murray Valley Highway, he turned, drove into the park, crashing into the rotunda.
Acting Superintendent David Ryan said all three members of the group were injured and taken to hospital, with the woman suffering broken bones.
Supt Ryan said police had followed a trail of oil to the Strathmerton area before losing it.
“We’re looking for witnesses who may have seen a red Ford in or around Strathmerton with damage to it,” he said.
Police believe the car is a red Ford Laser or similar.
It would have damage to its front.
Supt Ryan said the driver was a Caucasian, in his early 30s, with dark facial hair.
The victims didn’t know the offender.
“The victims are still talking to us but the reasons remain unclear,” Supt Ryan said.
