The Albury woman took the Thurgoona exit on her way to pick up a friend but veered right into the table drain about 9.30am.
Police are yet to find out what caused her to leave the road.
“From all accounts it could have ended a lot worse,” Sen-Constable Nick Fahy said.
“She went to take the exit but veered off the road — we’re continuing to investigate why.”
The woman was taken to Albury hospital for observation.
Back at the scene her bronze Toyota Camry remained in the ditch with a smashed window but looking otherwise unscathed.
That was proved when a tow-truck worker was able to drive the car out of the ditch.
