For those who can & those who can’t is a new art exhibition at the Felltimber Community Centre in Wodonga, including a mix of portraits and natural landscapes drawn under the tutorage of Robyn Hulley.
Ms Hulley, who is studying a diploma of botanical illustration through the London’s Royal Botanic Artist Society, says that she has enjoyed watching her students progress since starting the weekly classes in February.
“It’s absolutely fantastic because people who have done this work couldn’t draw, and now they’re almost at a professional standard,” she said.
“It spurs and motivates them to go onto the next stage, for me to bring that out of people is my greatest reward.”
While she is still an arts student herself, Ms Hulley has already been offered a teaching role by the society after she completes her course and has an assignment hanging in the prestigious Manchester Central Hall.
One of her students is retired nurse Rita Keating, who wanted to reignite her passion for drawing and saw the classes as the perfect opportunity.
“To me it was making you sit down and do something, and the assignments made you practise what you were taught,” she said.
“Everybody who did this class was amazed at what they could do, and that was a big turning point for most of us.”
The exhibition finishes tomorrow with the public encouraged to vote for their favourite piece, and the success of the course has Ms Hulley making plans for early next year.
