The Albury Tigers centre forward, 16, made the latest cut of the Australian Men’s Born ’96 Squad announced on the national website last week.
From a squad of more than 50, it has been cut to 29 after trials in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.
Dempsey said he was happy to have been picked.
“It’s good,” he said. “I wasn’t at home when (it was put up on the website) and Dad saw it and rang me.”
Dempsey said playing senior water polo in Sydney had helped him improve his game and had given him an extra dimension for body positioning in the water.
His rise means he will move soon to Sydney, and will attend the all-boys Newington College.
The next step of the squad’s development is an intensive five-day training camp in Sydney in January.
Once the squad is cut again it will compete overseas in 2014.
