Is it time for Australia to allow gay marriage?

Britain's Parliament has just approved gay marriage. And US President Barack Obama alluded to it in his inauguration speech. "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well," he said.

In Australia, the Prime Minister has stated she is against gay marriage. Are our laws out of step with the rest of the world? Should this be an election issue? Why should gay marriage be allowed in Australia? Or why not?
