The Gardens Apartments will house 16 strata title homes and two penthouses in a structure that will rise 22 metres above Dean Street — the same height as the post office clock tower.
All will have three bedrooms and will cost several hundred thousand dollars apiece, with closed-circuit television and electronic locks all part of a sophisticated security system.
The vacant Dean Street Medical Clinic and four brick home units on the Wilcox Street corner will be demolished to make way for the five-storey building sitting on a semi-basement car park.
Zauner Construction has joined doctors from the Gardens Medical Centre and two other parties in submitting a development application to clear the site and build the apartments.
Plans for apartments were first revealed in The Border Mail in September 2011 and since then there have been long negotiations with city planning staff and immediate neighbours Arthur and Julie Frauenfelder.
The plan shows the apartments’ wall set back nine metres from the Frauenfelders’ fence.
The semi-basement car park for 44 cars will abut it.
Leffler Simes Architects has designed a building with red bricks and bluestone walls with wrought iron handrails, all meant to reflect the heritage character of the gardens and neighbourhood.
