Firefighters were called to a fire on Baranduda Boulevard near Westmont Aged Care about 6.30pm.
CFA district 24 duty officer John Bigham said the fire burnt three hectares and came within a kilometre of the retirement home.
The cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated.
A fire on state government land at Thurgoona, north of the Kinross Woolshed, burnt two hectares of grass.
It started from grinding work on a fence.
The blaze came within 50 metres of homes and the Kinross.
RFS Southern Border team manager George Alexander said the incident served as a warning.
“It’s still dry and even though there’s no total fire ban in place, people need to be more sensible and perhaps hold off until we get some rain,” he said.
Meanwhile, mechanical problems with a truck sparked eight spot fires along the Murray Valley Highway at 3pm.
Eight firefighting units were called.
“The fire burnt dangerously close to Warrabilla Wines,” Mr Bigham said.
The highway was still blocked late last night with Vic Roads concerned about the potential for falling trees.
