Today, the former Army automotive engineer keeps about 2500 model tanks in his study at his Wodonga home.
“My father used to make all the early aeroplane models,” Mr Knott said.
“I got into tanks because he hadn’t built them.”
On Saturday Mr Knott will be among 400 scale model builders and collectors when he MCs the fourth annual Scale Model Exhibition and Competition at Mirambeena Community Centre in North Albury.
The show is expected to attract people from as far as Canberra, Orange, Tumut and Wagga.
Mr Knott strictly builds tanks, but his fellow scale modellers build everything from fancy cars to science fiction characters.
He said scale modelling aimed to make the finished product as life-like as possible.
“It’s about getting the ideal artistic finish, to get realism, that’s the ultimate goal.”
The exhibition will run on Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 9pm to 4pm.
Entry is $5 for adults with proceeds to the Albury-Wodonga Health special care nursery.
