Cheeky car horns and 80-year-old revving engines kept regular motorists entertained yesterday as they waited for the vintage cavalcade.
They were witnessing the start of the fifth leg of the RACV Fly the Flag Northern Tour.
There was hardly a car on the make-shift starting grid in Hovell Street that didn’t have an interesting story.
For tour organiser Tony Pettigrew, it was hard to top the Attrolaster, said to be one of only two left.
Elsewhere there was an old Mercedes, a Jaguar and an MG all with an Australian or RACV flag on the roof.
There were the obligatory Holdens and Fords and a big old Buick.
RACV motoring interests manager Brian Kelly said the RACV was the first car club in Victoria.
“This tour (the 12th) is about supporting its heritage,” he said.
“This year we’re retracing the original rally back in 1903.”
Yesterday’s starting line had plenty of history and it wasn’t just the cars.
Waving the starting flag was Brian Grealy from the Wodonga RACV depot and his son, Lionel, and grandson, Peter, who work with him.
The rally started on Saturday in Melbourne, has visited Shepparton, Wagga, Temora and Junee and will finish at Yarra Glen tomorrow.
