VISUAL ARTS AND HISTORY: EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS
ALBURY ART GALLERY
ICONS FROM THE COLLECTION
UNTIL MAY 26
Your chance to view the treasures of the Albury Council visual art collection. The collection began in 1974 when it took over as custodian of the Albury Art Prize collection. Since 1947, this annual prize, initiated by the Albury Art Society acquired works by acclaimed Australian artists such as Noel Counihan, Max Ragless, Weaver Hawkins, Franz Kempf, Kenneth Jack and Mary Beetson. When the historic Albury Town Hall was converted to an art gallery in 1982 a decision was made to collect Australian photography, primarily through the biennial National Photographic Prize. Since 1983, the gallery has acquired more than 91 works directly from this biennial competition and has expanded this collection with a further 350 works. In the 1990s the eclectic collections of Howard Daniel came to the Albury Art Gallery. Today, with more than 1600 works in storage, this exhibition seeks to highlight some of the amazing artworks in the Albury Council collection. The exhibition will also include new works by leading, emerging and local artists who that have been commissioned to reinterpret works from the permanent collection with a contemporary perspective. Exhibition opening: 6pm Friday, April 12. RSVP (02) 6043 5800. Free event.
JACQUES CALLOT’S ETCHINGS FROM THE DANIEL GIFT
UNTIL MAY 26
Jacques Callot was one of the great artists of 17th century Europe and the one most responsible for turning the technique of etching into an art. Born and raised in France, he travelled to Italy to be trained under the great masters of the time. Callot's work soon surpassed even that of his masters and with the patronage of the powerful Medici family he became one of the most sought after and influential artists in Europe. Drawn from the Albury Council collection, this suite of etchings was collected by the foremost authority on Jacques Callot, Howard Daniel, who gifted the work to the Albury Art Gallery in the 1990s. Free event.
ALBURY LIBRARY MUSEUM
FLORAL FESTIVAL

The Albury Floral Festival ran annually in March from 1951 to1972 with the highlight a parade of floats along Dean Street to the Albury Sportsground as well as a Floral Festival Queen Competition, where a Festival Queen was crowned at the finish of the parade. In this vibrant display, the Albury Floral Festival is presented in its entire colour and celebration through a collection of Floral Festival gowns, memorabilia and numerous photographs from throughout its 21 years. The opening offers an opportunity to celebrate International Museums Day. Free event. Phone: (02) 6023 8333.
SUPERCROC
UNTIL JULY 14
What was it like to be one of the largest crocodilians ever to roam the earth? Meet SuperCroc, an 11-metre, 9000 kilogram replica of Sarchosuchus imperator. SuperCroc's jaws boasted more than 100 teeth, including a row of enlarged bone-crushing incisors. Its eye sockets were tilted upward, which helped it to conceal its huge body underwater while scanning the river's edge for its next dinner. SuperCroc was donated to Australian Museum by its creator, National Geographic Channel. Its genuine ancestor roamed the world 110 million years ago, in what is now the windswept Ténéré Desert, Central Niger, home of the richest dinosaur beds in Africa. When the fossilised jaws were found, palaeontologists knew it was no dinosaur. In fact, it was a dinosaur eater! The snout and teeth were designed for grabbing prey— fish, turtles and dinosaurs that strayed too close. This enormous reptile made Africa's ancient riverbanks a very dangerous place. Programs: A Conversation with Mark Richmond, herpetologist and owner of Crocodile Encounters, 5pm, Thursday, July 4, in the SuperCroc' exhibition as he shares his knowledge about crocodiles and other reptiles. Free event for all ages. Bookings: Phone (02) 6023 8333.

WANGARATTA ART GALLERY
SOLARGRAPHY
UNTIL MAY 26
Solargraphy: The art of recording the paths of the sun using a pinhole camera.
See the local landscape as you have never seen it before in this intriguing exhibition that explores a new form of photography that captures a period of time beyond what we can experience with our own eyes; there may be weeks or even months in a single image.
The exhibition is a collection of images by three local photographers: Jesse Thompson, Marc Bongers and Beth Hulley. Living locally was an inspiration for the project which started two years ago. The photographs were produced using a relatively new technique discovered in the early 1990s using a pinhole camera and light sensitive paper. Cameras used for this project were spread throughout the North East to pinpoint known and/or interesting sites and left there anywhere from four weeks to six months. The result was a series of high contrast, ephemeral and unique images. The outcome has been experimental and surprising for all involved. Don’t miss the opportunity to see these strange and beautiful images from three very talented local photographers. The exhibition, open daily, is in the Wangaratta Art Gallery’s Workshop Space. Phone (03) 5722 0865 for more information.
MADE TO LAST: THE CONVERSATION OF ART
UNTIL MAY 26
This is a NETS (National Exhibition Touring Support) Victoria exhibition in partnership with the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation at the University of Melbourne, curated by Sherryn Vardy. The conservation of art is commonly associated with the restoration of 17th century easel paintings or marble sculptures from antiquity. Materials used in contemporary art have challenged this perception and necessitated a shift in the way conservators interact with artists. Knowledge of the artist's intent, creative processes, materials and techniques, and accurate documentation, are all important tools employed by conservators in the preservation of contemporary art. Artists include Brook Andrew, Penny Byrne, Juan Ford, Ghostpatrol and Claire Anna Watson.
PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY
UNTIL MAY 26
An exhibition of a very different form of photography, by Marc Bongers and Jesse Thompson. In the Wangaratta Art Gallery Workshop Space.
BENALLA ART GALLERY
ANGRY PENGUINS AND THE ANTIPODEANS
UNTIL MAY 26
Cups of tea, painting in the countryside, the wool price is good, things are good “back home” in England, Robert Menzies’ Academy of Australian Art is building exaggeration, true, but the late 1930s to early 1940s provided the perfect environment for new ideas and different values. Enter “Angry Penguins”, named after the Adelaide magazine published by a young Max Harris, the artists whose core group of Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker and Joy Hester were occasional complemented in idea and image by members of the Contemporary Art Society. The time was ripe for change and the fuel came from Europe and the US - surrealism and modern poetry. It was going well until the Ern Malley hoax. Ironically, many of the same artists formed the “Antipodeans”, a group of artists reacting to the “threat” of abstract images from America and Europe. This show is a celebration of works within the Benalla Art Gallery’s own collection and of a time when every painting had a story to tell. The exhibition is in the Ledger Gallery.
