She began working in local libraries in 1970 when she accepted a job at the Albury library at the time it was in QEII Square in a space located behind the Library Museum building.
Eight years later, a library in Lavington was established in Urana Road before a switch to a shop in the Coles supermarket complex, which is now occupied by a hairdresser.
Mrs Kennedy worked in both locations and especially remembered conditions being so basic in Urana Road that the wash-basin was outdoors with only cold water.
Lavington Library moved to its site in 1991 and generous donations from the newsprint mill and Rotary enabled its collection to grow beyond 10,000 books.
She vividly recalls the manual stamp and card system used for borrowing of books before the leap of faith to computers.
Mrs Kennedy worked alongside Lavington librarian Robin Hengstmengel before her retirement in 2005.
The full-time staff will grow to three when the move to Northpoint is made with Mrs Kennedy supported by four part-timers.
She said there were some regrets with the move.
“We are all looking forward to the move but I think we will miss this building and the friendliness,” she said.
“We’ve got to make sure we take that and the community spirit with us.
“We’ve got to make sure people and staff still feel it is a community-type library.
“Hopefully we don’t lose that and keep that going.”
The Lavington Library will close today before re-opening on the ground floor of Northpoint on July 12.
