The member for Indi released a statement this afternoon stating that she wanted Mr Abbott to have the "freedom to select his new frontbench'' without her involvement which is under a cloud as counting continues in her electorate.
"As my own future in the Parliament is not assured, I have asked that I not be considered for selection," Mrs Mirabella said.
"Around Tony are men and women of great substance who will ably conduct themselves asmembers of his Cabinet.
"Tony has my strongest support as well as my deepest respect and affection.
"Australians will be very well served by him as our Prime Minister.
"This is not about me.
"This is about our country."
Mrs Mirabella said it was apparent a result in the seat of Indi would not be known for days with independent challenger Cathy McGowan holding a lead of about 1500 votes.
One of the central arguments of Mrs Mirabella supporters during the election campaign was that a vote for the Liberal incumbent would give Indi a voice at the heart of government as a minister.
Mrs Mirabella had been shadow minister for innovation, industry, science and research.
