John Bergamin, 45, was arrested by homicide squad detectives on March 24, charged and taken before Myrtleford Court where no application for bail was made.
An indication was given to the court that a bail application may be made at a later date.
Mr Bergamin’s application went before Justice Betty King.
It was granted and the charge against him adjourned to Wangaratta Court on August 3.
The body of Mrs Bergamin, 37, has never been found after she disappeared on August 18, 2002.
Police believe she was forcibly taken from her Brien Crescent home at Wangaratta.
Her disappearance was treated as suspicious immediately because she took no personal belongings.
She also has not accessed her bank account or contacted family or friends since.
Since her disappearance divers have searched the King River near Docker, and homicide squad detectives a Cheshunt farm and bushland at Cheshunt South without finding a body.
Victoria Police were successful in an application for compulsory DNA testing on two people thought to be connected to her disappearance.
Homicide squad detective Sgt Shane Brundell was at Myrtleford last month for the court appearance of Mr Bergamin.
He said no property had been seized during the arrest of Mr Bergamin and no searches had been planned to locate the body of Mrs Bergamin.
“This will not happen unless people come forward with information as a result of the arrest,” he said.
Police have been requested to prepare a brief of evidence by June 2.
