WODONGA has been waiting for some years now for work to begin on the multimillion-dollar Mann shopping centre.
But the global financial crisis and issues, including stalled negotiations with key tenants, have seen repeated delays to the start of the project.
The $60 million centre is still awaiting a permit from Wodonga Council but its developers are now confident construction will begin midway through next year, with plans for its completion by the end of 2015.
News the barriers to the Mann centre might be resolved comes as the Victorian government yesterday confirmed it would provide $2.1 million towards the construction of road infrastructure surrounding the site, including realignment of Elgin Boulevard that will begin in January.
The money will also go towards the reconstruction of Hovell Street and South Street, providing improved access to the site.
The Mann centre has been a focus for Wodonga because of its potential to discourage the loss of trade to Albury.
The project comes with the promise of jobs via its construction and retail employment and the creation of a retail landmark for the rejuvenated city centre.
