Albury police Inspector Kim Sorensen said the shriek of the car’s fire alarm had woken the couple about 4.30am at their Dick Road home.
They found their white van, which was parked in their car space, on fire and phoned triple-0.
“Luckily the fire was extinguished before it could cause too much other damage,” Insp Sorensen said.
The fire did damage the outside wall of the couple’s house and as well as destroying their van.
Insp Sorensen said the attack appeared to random.
“Police are very concerned about this type of behaviour,” he said.
“We appeal to anyone who saw anything in the area at the time to come forward and help us with our inquiries.”
He said the apparent randomness of the fire was highly unusual and a cause for concern.
“This sort of crime is was usually connected to other crimes such as drug debts or stolen vehicles, he said.
Insp Sorensen urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Albury detectives on (02) 6023 9299.
