RACING has lost one of its most distinctive voices with the death yesterday of popular commentator and race caller Tony Campbell from cancer.

Known as the voice of the nation’s capital, Campbell recently gave his age as 58 and spent almost 30 years with the Canberra Racing Club, which will honour his life with a lasting tribute.
“We will have a minute’s silence at this Friday’s races and the jockeys will wear black armbands and then some time over the next couple of weeks the committee will meet to decide on a fitting long-term tribute,” chief executive Damien Foley said.
Campbell called many Sydney races for the ABC and occasionally for the Australian Jockey Club.
