A SEVERE weather warning has been issued for the North East, including damaging winds.
The Bureau of Meteorology says a low pressure trough crossing from South Australia is likely to combine with a cold front and low pressure system passing from south of Tasmania later today.
The combination is expected to cause wind speeds of 55km/h to 70km/h in areas above 800m, including gusts of up to 100km/h.
Alpine regions are particularly at risk with gusts expected to hit 120km/h.
The SES advises people to move cars away from trees, secure any loose items in yard and stay away from fallen powerlines.
