Sgt Paul Evans said trailer loads of batteries and up to 400 litres worth of fuel were stolen from the Myrtleford Recycling Centre in Morrison Lane in several break-ins during the past month.
“Over a period of time people have targeted those types of places and there has been a spate through the North East,” Sgt Evans said.
He said it was the lure of cash that captured a burglar with items like batteries and fuel on-sold.
“It’s a commodity,” Sgt Evans said.
He said police would rely on Myrtleford residents to keep an eye on their recycling centre for would-be thieves.
“We try to take steps to police the place, but we need anyone that sees a suspicious car to jot the registration number down and let us know because it gives us a starting point,” Sgt Evans said.
“It’s really important we get a starting point and then we can get a line of investigation.”
Anyone with information should phone Myrtleford police on (03) 5752 1003.
