Wangaratta school blaze tackled quickly

AN old tractor tyre and building material caught alight on Saturday in a school yard at Wangaratta.

Two tankers and 10 firefighters arrived at St Benard’s Primary School in Williams Road just after 3pm.

Firefighter Garth Lilley said even though the fire was small and only took 15 minutes to contain, there was potential for disaster.

“I could’ve been a very nasty one with the conditions we had today,” he said.

“It wasn’t threatening when we arrived on scene but if it was left unattended it could have been.”

Mr Lilley said the cause of the fire was undetermined and remained under investigation.
