Albury council confirmed contractors and council staff would be on site this morning and that the historic water feature was scheduled to be removed by midday.
Traffic control measures have been put in place around Australia Park.
Albury mayor Kevin Mack said the council was looking for a suitable place to relocate the wheel, which was donated to Albury from the Mitta Valley in the 1960s.
“It would be great to see the wheel returned to its original home. We’re in discussions with a number of parties and hope to find a suitable home in the next few months,” he said.
A recent structural assessment of the wheel found that it had become structurally unsound and contained both lead and potentially asbestos-based paints.
