Urban design student and former Border resident Andrew Boyd Barber advises that the council should start planning for an upgraded precinct at the city central Albury Sportsground.
He makes reasonable points that the area could make good connections to the river, the pool and other sporting facilities, with the advantages of shared parking.
But some of the points he makes seem to be a little city-centric, particularly his opinion that it is less viable for people to use their cars to get to and from big events.
In Melbourne or Sydney, you would probably be less inclined to drive and park at big sporting games and concerts but there are many other means of getting there.
That’s not really the case in regional centres, where public transport is not so available.
If it’s issues such as car parking that are the main concern, then maybe we just need a shift in our approach to the issue, as opposed to a shift of venues.
The people of Lavington who support big events in their neck of the woods might argue that central Albury already gets its fair share.
