Luke Anthony Terrill, 20, will be eligible for release from jail on June 6 after his sentencing in the District Court at Albury.
He has been in custody with bail refused since last year and pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated break and enter committing a serious indictable offence.
The court heard that a grandmother, her daughter and two grandchildren lived in a three-bedroom public housing home in Goolagar Crescent at Springdale Heights.
They returned home about 10.45pm on January 8 and overheard voices from inside their house.
The daughter went to the side of the house and saw the laundry door was open. She was carrying her three-month-old daughter, went inside and saw four men, including Terrill, standing in the lounge room.
Three men ran out of the house but Terrill was standing between a curtain and nearby window.
He moved away from the window, took hold of an electric pedestal fan and raised it above his shoulder motioning towards the woman.
She feared for the safety of her daughter and shielded the child by putting her on the floor behind a wall.
The mother picked up a piece of wood from the floor in the lounge and swung it towards Terrill, striking him to the side of the head.
He fell backwards to the floor, broke a lounge window and the woman picked up her child and ran to a nearby house.
Terrill was told the police had been called and when officers arrived he was in the backyard where he was arrested.
