And in what was a carbon copy of race 1 on city handicap day it was leading jockey Hugh Bowman who had to settle for second place on the opening favourite Arma De Fuego($3).
The win was also some consolation for well-known owner Richard Pegum.
His famous colours were carried by four runners on the opening day of the carnival without success.
Pegum praised the ride of Luke Currie and his trainer.
“She’s a very good mare who has had more than her fair share of problems,” he said.
“But Brett has all the facilities down here and we will now let her work through her grades.
“We thought it might be a bit too short for her but Luke Currie rode her to perfection.”
Cavanough said the addition of blinkers and a wet track worked in his favour.
“The soft track certainly helped,” he said.
