Wodonga Acting Sen-Sgt Paul Brady said about six cars had been broken into with wallets, GPS devices and loose coins among the property taken.
Sen-Sgt Brady said the windows of two cars had been smashed at the Hume Weir to grab the valuables inside.
He said in Wodonga, four cars parked in driveways with valuables left inside and the car doors unlocked made for easy pickings for the thieves.
He said residents had to take responsibility to reduce their chances of becoming victims of theft.
“There’s some preventative methods that people can do themselves that can protect their property and lower the incidents,” he said.
“A lot of people don’t lock their cars parked in driveways and they leave their wallets, GPS and other valuables displayed inside. Preventing the crime is the responsibility of the victim too.”
Sen-Sgt Brady asked residents to keep an eye on who was in their street and report irregularities.
He said if there was an emergency situation, phone Triple-0, otherwise they should phone Wodonga police on (02) 6049 2600 with a description of anyone they believed was suspicious.
