Three goals in five minutes just before half-time broke open the game at La Trobe University yesterday.
Dustin Patten converted a penalty after Peter Noordwier was brought down in the box at the 24th minute to give Boomers a 1-0 lead.
But it was Descha Saisanid (37 mins), Harry Drummond (39 mins) and coach Andrew Grove (42 mins) who had sealed the game by the end of the first half.
Grove added another 16 minutes into the second half.
“That was the first time we have put it altogether for 90 minutes of football,” he said.
“We have had periods of 10 and 15 minutes but not the whole game.
“Dustin Patten was great in the middle of the defence but Shane Elwood at left back was outstanding.
“In some games, you have a lot of chances but fail to convert but in that first half we were faultless.
“Saying that, I don’t think the score reflected the contest.
“Outside of that 20 minute period, it was a real arm-wrestle with both sides knocking the ball around and creating chances.”
In the Ovens Valley, Myrtleford made it five in a row with a 2-0 win over fellow top-four contender Melrose.
English import George Taylor opened the scoring after just a minute, a run down the wing and resultant cross deflected into the net.
It was Taylor again after 22 minutes to make it a brace.
The Savoys lost Nathan Gasperoni just before kick-off, teenager Sam Morgan forced to back up from reserve grade and fill the void.
“Every player did their job,” coach Nathan Mirt said.
“We talked about it before the game and the need to play for each other and we are really starting to see the results.
“Wins like this and beating United after being down 2-0 are just great for our self- belief.
“What was impressive was that we still able to set up four five good chances in the second half but just didn’t put it in the back of the net.
“George scored the goals but Raul Pahina, in the middle of the defence never stopped and no one got through there.
“Will Keenan in goals also had a great game.”
