High Street pushes on with the black velvet band | PICTURES

A SMOOTH-as-velvet black roadway now runs across the spot in Wodonga where slow trains trundled for 125 years and road traffic had to click-clack over sets of rail tracks.

High Street was closed yesterday as workers laid the final seal of asphalt on the reconstructed road. Men and machines worked their way up both sides of the thoroughfare from 6am until late afternoon.

Line marking will be done overnight to minimise disruption.

The Elgin Boulevard realignment is expected to be completed in spring, depending on the weather.
