Coming into the clash on the back of 122, 156 and 140-point wins over Myrtleford, Raiders and Wodonga, the Tigers did the seemingly impossible by taking their game to another level against a team pushing for finals.
Big Irishman Setanta O’hAilpin led the scoring avalanche with 11 goals to take his tally to 43 in the past four weeks, while Brayden O’Hara firmed as the Morris Medal favourite by kicking five goals from the midfield.
The victory gave Albury an average winning margin of 152 points in the past month.
Co-coach Daniel Maher said it was difficult to fault the performance.
“We were able to get our hands on the footy early and put a lot of pressure on Wang,” Maher said.
“The boys are playing well at the moment but Yarrawonga at Yarrawonga next weekend is going to be a totally different proposition.
“We know they will throw everything at us.”
It was clear from the first minute when O’Hara bombed a long goal that Albury meant business and by half-time, with the score 20.11 to 1.3, the league’s highest total of 43.29 was under threat.
Wangaratta’s only major of the first half came at the 26-minute mark of the second term when Luke Mullins converted from a set shot.
Ruckmen Luke Wells and Aisake O’hAilpin took turns dominating the hit-outs, while Matt Munro, Chris Hyde, Luke Packer and Lonnie Hampton were also prolific against the injury-hit Magpies.
The Tigers lost small forward John Mitchell early after he received a knock to his knee, while defender Michael Thompson was rested in the second half with a corky.
