The council yesterday endorsed the $350,000 sale of the remaining portion of the offices in Honour Avenue to Health Culture Fitness Centre, which began operating in the same building in late 2012.
The council relocated to the former Corowa Bowling Club building around the same time, with a library and visitor information centre part of the site.
Health Culture Fitness Centre is operated by Corowa- Rutherglen premiership captain Darrell Spencer and former Yarrawonga footballer Jamie Almond.
They operate a gymnasium and offer physiotherapy, myotherapy and dietary services, with recruiting under way for a naturopath.
“People were forced to travel out of town for those type of services,” Mr Spencer said.
“It is beneficial to have them under one roof because they feed off one another.
“It will not only service the people in Corowa, but also those in outer-lying communities.”
The sale of the old offices is outlined in general manager Chris Gillard’s report for today’s meeting.
“This is a good outcome for council and will allow the swimming pool reserve to be increased with the sale proceeds,” Mr Gillard said.
“This sale will now facilitate council planning towards the upgrade of the Corowa swimming pool currently scheduled to commence in 2015-16.”
Swimming pool funding has also been included in the council’s recent successful application for a rate variation which will reap an additional $2 million over the next four years.
The council also decided to dispose of another property at 5 Isabel Street, Corowa.
It has previously been used by the council as a youth centre until “Unit Y” was relocated six years ago to its current location when Isabel Street was deemed too small.
The property was then used as Corowa Family Day Care.
“The building is small and more suited for residential or business purposes and council have sufficient other facilities,” Mr Gillard said.
