The man was filmed on security footage last Saturday night buying a slab of bourbon and cola from a Wodonga liquor outlet.
He is aged in his late teens or early 20s and police say he used a credit card that didn’t belong to him.
Det Acting Sgt Andrew Leonard said footage had been taken from several stores.
“There are three of four other retail outlets targeted,” he said.
“We’re very keen for that gentleman to come to Wodonga station on Monday morning.
“We’d encourage him to tell us what happened.”
Acting Sgt Leonard said it appeared the man had used a payWave credit card to buy items.
Officers are investigating how he came to have it.
“We believe the man drives a white Holden VR or VS sedan built around the mid-90s,” the sergeant said.
“The vehicle also has mag wheels.”
The man is pictured in one store with a heavily overweight man with dark hair.
Anyone with information about the man should contact police in (02) 6049 2600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
